Macalester is pleased to welcome to campus Koo Nimo, a world-renowned guitarist and a Ghanaian living legend. Please join us in celebrating his music (iTunes link) and his rich life dedicated to the preservation of traditional Ghanaian palm wine music.

Location: Weyerhauser Board Room
Time and Date: December 9th, 4:30-6pm.

At this event, Mary Hark, former Mac professor and book artist, will also talk about a book that celebrates Koo Nimo. The book can be viewed in the library.

On Saturday December 10th at 8pm, Koo Nimo will also join the African Music Ensemble in Kagin Commons.

Study Away Photo Contest Ends October 30th!

It is time again for the Fall Study Away Photo Contest! Submit up to three photos, one in each category: People, Environment, or Culture. Photos will be displayed in the Campus Center from 11/12-11/27. On Sunday, 11/13, there will be a small reception in the upstairs of the Campus Center.

One winner will be selected from each category. Campus Programs will frame the winning photos and they will be hung in Markim Hall until the next round of Study Away Contests.

Photos must be submitted no later than October 30th at midnight.

We are aware that there are some glitches with the new design and we are working to quickly address page and connection issues that are common with new redesigns. We are excited about our new page and the many benefits in conducting research that it will bring to our community. Thank you for your patience as we fine tune it.

For Faculty: please note that the book acquisition order form is available on the Faculty Services page right side, top of the list of links. The new interface has a "Search" form link at the top of the page under the page name on the left side on every page. On the main page the full search window shows by default. There you will find a link to "renew a book" and "Illiad login" (interlibrary loan request.) On secondary pages, selecting the "search" option will open the full form. If you have additional questions or concerns, please contact your liaison librarian.

We expect to have the major bugs and fixes addressed by the end of the week.

Until the problem is resolved, we suggest you use the "Limit by Subject" search option. You may also find it easier to go to the discipline subject guides to locate databases. Nadia, a library circulation manager, is the 2011 recipient of the Jean K. Archibald Award for Library Service. Kaija, a senior student aide in the library office, is the Macalester College Student of the Year. Kaija is also the Student of the Year for the state of Minnesota!

Changes to Electronic Course Reserves

At the end of this academic year, the Library staff will discontinue its electronic course reserves service. Moodle and the increased availability of full text electronic content through library licensed databases have made this service redundant.

The library will continue its copyright management service for Moodle material, ascertaining the need for permission, and paying for it, when use of copyrighted materials exceeds the guidelines of Fair Use. Library staff will continue to provide traditional reserves services, processing library and personal books and CDs, and reprints that are not for electronic access.

The library staff will also continue to serve administrative departments who need to make material available electronically.

During the Spring term, the library staff can assist in scanning documents if department staff is unable to do so. Please consult with your Academic Information Associate if you have questions about uploading material to Moodle.

A letter has been distributed to all faculty and department administrators detailing this plan.

The Alliance for Taxpayer Access provides a list of form letters that can be used for this purpose.

Why support this bill?
The bill would ensure that the published results of research funded by the U.S. government can be accessed and used by American taxpayers via the Internet.

Journal Cancellations for 2011 - Deadline July 6

The library and faculty have completed their annual review of Macalester's periodical subscriptions. Thirteen titles will be canceled as of January 2011, making way for new subscriptions. Faculty members with questions or concerns about these cancellations should contact Laura Secord (secord@macalester.edu, x6701) before noon on Tuesday, July 6th. Library Entrance Temporarily Moved

Due to a construction project around the entrance of the DeWitt Wallace Library, the library entrance will be closed for approximately 4 weeks starting Monday, June 7, 2010.

How to Access the Library During the Construction Project
During the first week of construction you may access the Library through the single door emergency exit on the south side of the building - the side that faces Leonard Center.

Once access is available via the Link (the connector between the Library and Old Main), the emergency exit will be closed again and access will be available via Old Main.

Cleaning out your files?

Help us get the class of 2014 off to a good start on paper use! The Library is coordinating the production of "Onesie" (single-side-free paper) notebooks for each member of the incoming class.

If you or your department have some one-side-free paper you would otherwise be recycling, we'd love to have you drop it off at the library circulation desk, send it to us through campus mail, or contact us for pickup. PLEASE NOTE: paper contributed should not have any confidential or potentially confidential information on it.

On April 15, 2010, a bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives with this purpose. Currently, publishing rights to much of government-sponsored research goes to private companies who charge for access.

You can help too: Contact your representatives (Senate, House) and express your support for public access to taxpayer-funded research.

Macalester Welcomes LibTech 2010 Attendees

On March 17-18, 2010, Macalester’s Library and Media Services will host the third annual Library Technology Conference on the Macalester campus. The event provides an opportunity for library professionals from around the region and the country to come together to discuss the technologies that affect library services; to see examples of what libraries are doing with these technologies; and to allow participants to learn specific skills or knowledge that they can take back and adapt for use within their own library. The conference offers two full days of keynote and concurrent sessions. Nearly 400 library professionals will attend LibTech 2010.
