Technical Difficulties with WorldCat

We are experiencing some technical difficulties with Macalester WorldCat displaying Mac materials. Macalester materials will show up in a display of materials owned by CLIC, but will not show up as a result of limiting a search to Macalester only. You can also do a search in ClassicCLICnet, but you must do a search for all libraries and then check holdings for Mac materials. We will probably not have a solution until sometime Monday, Nov. 2. This problem will not affect searching for materials in other CLIC libraries and placing requests/holds. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Banned Books Week, Celebrating Freedom to Read, 9/26-10/3

Tell us your favorite banned book

Stop by the library to view the exhibit on banned books. The display will be found in the front entrance of the library. Banned Books Week is an annual celebration to call attention to books that are targets of censorship.

From the ALA website: “Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the foundation for Banned Books Week. BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections. Imagine how many more books might be challenged—and possibly banned or restricted—if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society."

Creating New Spaces - Updates on the Library Summer Projects

There are a number of projects that will be creating some challenges for those who want to use the library this summer. The library will mostly remain open, but the following is information on what to expect during the next couple of months. We are doing some significant renovations within the library which may be disruptive to those who want to use the library. At the same time, there will be significant work done to the exterior entry of the library. We apologize for some of the inconvenience this may create, but we are hoping to complete these projects by the beginning of August. We appreciate everyone's patience as we work to create new spaces that will include a second instruction room, a comfortable reading room, as well as more inviting learning spaces for students.

Library Closed on Monday - Movers on Monday - On Monday, June 15th, we will be starting the process to relocate the lower level computer lab to the main level. Movers will be coming to remove shelves and move furniture. This will create some significant noise and disruption on Monday.

More Moving on Tuesday - The lower level lab is closed. Movers on Tuesday will be here to relocate the lab furnishings to the main level. This may take all of Tuesday and portion of Wed.

Electrical work
will begin once furnishings are in place. This may require sme drilling within the library. We will post notices when we have a date for this work.

Exterior Work
- Beginning June 22nd the front doors of the library will be blocked due to construction work on the plaza. We will be posting signs to direct patrons to Old Main in order to access the library through the link. We will have access to the front doors at the end of two works, but access will only be from the North side of campus as the plaza work will continue to August.

We will post updates on our progress as we proceed this summer.

Pilot Test for Electronic Academic Texts

The library has been working with MCSG and with the Bookstore in order to find workable solutions to the textbook pricing concerns that students have. The students will be funding up to $7000 in print textbooks with faculty approval which we will be placing on reserve in the library. In addition, the library is testing as a pilot for one year, ebrary's Academic Complete collection which provides close to 42,000 academic titles in electronic format. Some of the features of this service include:

* individual titles can be viewed simultaneously by an unlimited number of users
* e-book format allows an entire class to view and use the same edition of a title
* a personal bookshelf that allows users to make notes and highlight text and save them
* option that allows us to purchase individual titles if not included in Academic Complete collection

You can review information about the Academic Complete collection and test the service at
http://site.ebrary.com/lib/macalester/home.action

I'd like to encourage you to check out ebrary's Academic Complete collection to determine if your class text is available. We will be gathering feedback from faculty and students after midterms in the fall. If you have questions about this service, please contact your library liaison or Angi Faiks for more information.

Waste-Less Wednesday in the Library

Wednesday, Feb. 25th, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Co-sponsored by Sustainability Office

On Wednesday, February 25th, the library will turn off all printers, including printers in staff offices, for 8.5 hours, for just one day. In support of the Campus Energy Challenge and Recyclemania efforts, we want to call attention to the amount of printing that is done just in the library. The Sustainability Office has heard increasing concerns about the amount of printing that is done in the library and across campus and will be sharing tips on how to reduce printing. This event is a kickoff for a month-long focus on printing across campus.

During the day library and ITS staff will offer tips on saving pdfs to network accounts and demonstrate ways of highlighting and note-taking online.

Over the noon hour we invite community members to join us in the Harmon Room for a bagless "brown bag" lunch discussion. Suzanne Hansen and Terri Fishel will lead a discussion on issues related to printing reduction in the library. Together, we hope to generate new ideas and awareness for ways to print less often.
